EFT Externship Overview – North Carolina Community for EFT
The Emotionally Focused Therapy Externship is the entry point for developing competence in the EFT model and is recognized internationally by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT). Our four‑day training, offered through the North Carolina Community for EFT, provides a rich, immersive introduction to the theory, practice, and clinical applications of EFT for couples, families, and individuals.
Led by ICEEFT‑Certified Trainers, the Externship blends teaching, clinical observation, and experiential practice to help participants understand how attachment science shapes relationship distress—and how therapists can guide partners toward deeper emotional connection and secure bonding.
What You’ll Experience
Our Externship integrates multiple modes of learning to support both conceptual understanding and hands‑on skill development:
- Engaging presentations that outline the core principles, stages, and steps of the EFT model.
- Video demonstrations featuring real clinical sessions that illustrate key interventions.
- Live or recorded consultations with couples when available.
- Guided experiential exercises and role plays designed to strengthen attunement, validation, and enactment skills.
- Small‑group practice supported by experienced EFT clinicians and supervisors.
What Participants Learn
By the end of the Externship, participants will be able to:
- Understand EFT as an experiential, attachment‑based approach to treating relationship distress.
- Conceptualize negative interactional cycles and identify the underlying emotional processes that sustain them.
- Help partners access and express vulnerable emotions that create openings for connection.
- Facilitate new patterns of engagement through structured enactments that reshape bonding moments.
- Apply interventions that support de‑escalation, restructuring interactions, and repairing attachment injuries.
- Strengthen therapeutic alliances through attunement, validation, and responsiveness.
Participation Requirements
Requirements to participate:
- Hold the appropriate educational background, licensure, or professional training required to practice mental health care in their region, or be enrolled in a formal graduate program or supervised internship.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding any clinical material shared during training.
- Refrain from recording the training in any format; personal written notes of non‑confidential content are allowed.
This training is ideal for marriage and family therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and students preparing for these professions.

Continuing Education & Certification Pathway
Completion of the four‑day Externship fulfills the first major requirement toward becoming a Certified EFT Therapist through ICEEFT. Externship hours may also qualify for Continuing Education credit depending on your licensing board.
